Good morning! Welcome to another installment of Summer Reading. I have a spicier selection for you today from Ellora's Cave called SPELLBOUND DESIRE by Angelia Sparrow and Naomi Brooks. Let's see what their main character, D.J., has in store for her summer vacation.

Aren't I a little old to be writing a “What I did on my summer vacation” essay? I'm over forty and it just feels silly.

Besides, I'm going to do the same thing I do every summer, stay indoors and drink, while I try not to melt in the Memphis heat. And oh yeah, maybe stopping the world from ending. Again.

That's what I did last summer. See, when you walk into Admire Investigations, you get me, Dixie Jolene, and I'll probably look at you like something I scraped off my shoe. If you try calling me by my full name, you'll be leaving quicker than you came in. And the only reason you won't be going out the window is because the air conditioner is in the way.

Bran McKay wasn't intimidated, though. Yeah, that's him sprawling on the couch. Budge over and let the nice people have a seat. And keep your kilt down.

Sexy man, but he'd hump a tree if I didn't keep him on a short leash. Pay not attention to the laughter and lewd suggestions. I'm telling them about Oeilett, so shush.

Bran's a combat mage, one of the first to retire in this century. He's a bit rough around the edges. His face? Oeilett ripped him up back at Chernobyl. I think the scars are kind of sexy, myself. Married? Nah, we're just handfasted. I might be getting married in August, if I don't kill him first.

Anyway, remember the big “God Wants You to be Rich!” seminar last summer? Yep, demon summoning. And Bran there came to town to stop the beast from getting his corporeality on in my town.

I mean, I'm a No-Talent. I got enough magic to let me see about two to five seconds ahead and draw all the weirdness in the world to my doorstep. That's why I work the Nightside of Memphis. Every city has a Nightside. Most people ignore it even when they do see it. I never had a chance at normal, so I got my carry permit, got my business license and started finding people and things. Blame it on an overdose of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys at an impressionable age.

I'm hoping for some peace and quiet this summer. Might even have a gig working crowd control at the King's Crossing party. Biggest event of the year here in Memphis. Elvis comes out at twilight, serenades the faithful with a couple piece, and then goes back in for a big party celebrating the day he became a vampire. All the vampires are invited, and everyone who's anyone is there.

Yeah, that's “Black Magic Woman.” I gotta take this, it's the Bitch Patrol. Uh-huh. Yeah. Be right there. Fire up the Triumph big guy. We have work.

Sorry to run out on you like this, but when the Preternatural and Magical Squadron calls, trouble is going down in my town. If you want more about the Oeilett case, you can check out the official write up. Here's my card. Call if you need me.

On the Nightside of Memphis, werewolves teach college, zombies load trucks and private investigator D. J. is hard at work, finding missing persons, solving cases and drinking herself into an early grave. Then Bran walks into her office, asking for her help in destroying the demon Oeilett, and everything changes.

Something about the battered, scarred combat mage ignites all the lusty feelings D. J. thought she had successfully drowned in rum. The mana he exudes weaves a web of desire over her, clouding thought and making the sultry summer even steamier.

Bran’s body and face may be marked by his previous battles, but everything under the black leather kilt works perfectly, and D. J. learns there are more things in Memphis, the hellplanes and her own heart than she had ever imagined.
