With 2015 around the corner, it’s time to make some plans.

1) Continue querying agents. (Maybe one of them will take me on.)

2) Write and edit two more books.

3) Go full time at my day job.

4) Make more time for reading and get through most of the books I’ve bought.

5) Blog more often, even if no one's reading.

What are your goals for 2015?

As for last year's goals, the only thing I finished was the most recent draft of WHITE SPIRIT. That was a big accomplishment within itself.
ravenela: (Duke silver eyes - upoffmyknees)
Since it's been ages since I blogged, let's talk about some good things.

Good Things at Work

No, I'm not a librarian yet, but I am getting more responsibility at work. Starting next month, I'll get to supervise the teen volunteer-run Reader's Theater at the library. I'm so excited!

Good TV

Forever has filled the Highlander-shaped hole in my heart. Is anyone else watching this show? I love that it's a procedural with a hint of fantasy. And Ioan Gruffudd is on my TV every week. I look forward to seeing the mythology unfold. So far, no swords or severed heads are involved.

Gotham has turned out better than I expected. Dude, Penguin is chewing the scenery all over the place and I love him!

Good Writing

Been sending out query letters, but no one has bitten yet. In the meantime, I'm working on my newest story about a merman hiding out on land in Charleston. Romance, death, and adventure ensue!

So, what good things are you enjoying?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
Happy spring, everybody! It's been a while since the last update so I thought I'd let you know I'm alive.

-The first draft of Mayberry with Monsters (no titled Don't Feed the Trolls) is finished. I'm letting it chill for a while before I revise it.

-I'm starting in on the next draft of White Spirit. This one is going a lot better. At this point, I don't feel frustrated. Always a good sign.

-Query letters will go out this summer. All they can do is tell me no. I'm hoping they want to tell me yes.

-In non-writing news, I saw the newest Captain America. No spoilers: The Winter Soldier needs the love of a good woman. And I volunteer for that position. Also, Black Widow was awesome.

So, what's new with you?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
Happy Sunday! It's still cold and there's no snow, but other than that, it's a good day.

I've been failing on all the fannish things. I still owe people drabbles. I still have January posts to make. I'll catch up...I promise.

However, Mayberry with Monsters (which will get a real title, I promise) is going well. As a rough draft, it's still terrible, but the story is moving along. I've been sticking to writing four pages a day, and it's working. Thank you, Mercedes Lackey!

Dani's voice is stilted, but I'm learning more about her as I go. Her friends haven't had much to do, and she's only talked to Jared once. More to come, though, as the story unfolds.

At least I'm accomplishing something, right?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
Good morning, everyone! It's Monday, and everyone is back at school or work. The holidays are over. Pardon me while I pout for a bit. Anyway, random bits and pieces today.

*No topic for today, but there are lots of days left this month. Suggest a topic, even if you've already suggested something.

*I've managed to write every day this year so far. (Yes, I am looking for a pat on the back.) I'm using one of Mercedes Lackey's suggestions, which is to write four pages a day. For some reason, it feels less daunting than a word count. I don't know why, but it's working.

*So, Hubby and I are into season two of Battlestar Galactica. A few things... )

Hubby thinks that if they just send Starbuck into a lot of situations, everything would be solved in five minutes. She's his favorite character.

*Is Sleepy Hollow back tonight? Does anyone know?

*The new season of Sherlock is completely awesome! Can we keep Mary? Please?
ravenela: (Rosalee library)
It's quiet in the library now, but we still have an hour and ten minutes before we close.

For those who celebrate, are you ready for the holiday? For those who don't, are you ready for New Year's Eve? My best friends are coming to my house for NYE this year, and I'm so excited! It's the first time in ten years.

I've planned my self-imposed writing deadlines for the coming year.

Feb. 28 - Finish first draft of MWM
March 31 - Finish 3rd draft of WS and start querying (finally...I've been saying this forever)
May 31 - 2nd draft of MWM, send off to betas
August 31 - 1st draft of Of the Sea (or the Pandora's Box story I started years ago)

And then we'll see what happens with the WS queries. Keep me true my to my word, gang!

As for TV shows and such, so much to catch up on. I think I'm going to have to choose the shows I like best to catch up on. I'm so far behind, and hubby and I keep picking up shows on Netflix to binge-watch together (BTW, Battlestar Galactica has a darker vibe than Star Trek, and we've both been sucked in).

If I don't post again before the new year, may your 2014 be awesome!
ravenela: (Duke silver eyes - upoffmyknees)
"...I've fallen in love with a man on the run."

A little Civil Wars for your Tuesday afternoon. It's a lyric from "Devil's Backbone," which is the song that currently reminds me of Duke Crocker. (Speaking of, I have a whole playlist. I need to share it at some point.)

So, what is making me happy this week?

*I figured out what was bothering me in MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS. I originally had an infodump at the beginning where Dani's mom explained the whole witchy thing to her, and it just wasn't right. I've now redone it where Dani is only getting bits of info as she goes along.

*TV is really making me happy. Loved last Friday's episode of Haven, last Monday's Sleepy Hollow, and I squeed all through the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

*Possible full time job openings are coming down the pipeline next month. Wish me luck!

*Thanksgiving is this Thursday here in the USA. We're hosting this year, and I'm excited about having everyone over. Plus, I can continue my tradition of watching the parade. It's not Thanksgiving without it. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

What's making you happy this week?
ravenela: (Duke bw - iloveimpala67)
How about I post something that's not meme or TV-related? Although, Duke and Ichabod will sneak in there somehow, and wouldn't that be a weird crossover? Anyway...

Still writing, but I haven't made any strides to query anything yet. *Makes a face* I'm disappointed in myself.

I set aside WHITE SPIRIT to work on MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS. Maybe this'll refresh me, and I can finish that edit.

I'm also really behind on all of my shows, except for Sleepy Hollow and Agents of SHIELD. There will be catching up this December. Lots of catching up.

All right, back to the writing drawing board.
ravenela: (Rosalee/Monroe)
September is here! And it's time to freshen up my writing.

I'm almost done with this draft of WHITE SPIRIT. The end is so close. While I finish it up, I want to devote some time to my new story.

Well, it's not completely new. It's more like a revamp.

In spring 2012, I wrote a very rough draft of a YA story about witches and trolls in my hometown. The working title is MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS (I grew up in the same area Andy Griffith did so that's where the title came from). Sadly, there were a lot of things happening but no plotline could be found. It was all over the place.

So, this fall, I'm revamping the idea. I'm changing up my troll and witch mythology. I've cut several characters. And I'm going to give it a real plot.

And that's where this month's #Writemotivation goals come in.

1) Plot out MWM

At this point, I'm trying to find all the troll mythology I can get my hands on. I found a book of Swedish folktales and legends, and I've scoured the internet. Do you know of any other books or websites where I can find information?

2) Write query for WS

Will do, as soon as I finish this draft.

3) Send out first round of queries

Will do as soon as I finish this draft.

4) Write first chapter of MWM

Will do as soon as I get my plot and outline in order.

For WS, I wrote by the seat of my pants. That meant a lot of revising. I hope with MWM, I can do a lot of the work up front, and maybe revision hell won't be so hellish.

How are your writing projects coming?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
The rumors of my death have been exaggerated. I'm still around, just nose deep in edits on WHITE SPIRIT. *Sings: "This is the book that never ends...never ends...never ends." Of course, I'm probably the only one who reads my blog, but I felt I should pop up anyway.

WS is moving very slowly. The edits are making it a better book, but I wonder if I'll ever be satisfied. I probably worry too much about this book, you know? But Tristan, McKenna, and the gang have been in my head for a good while now; I want to make them shine.

But this is the last edit for this round. After this, I'm going to start querying for an agent and see what happens.

In the meantime, my YA idea, MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS, is kicking around in my head. Dani, Jared, and their group really want their time in the spotlight. I actually wrote a rough draft for this idea once, but it had no plot. So, I'm ripping apart the original idea and starting from scratch. So far, I love my version of witches and trolls. (No, these are not your typical lumbering, giant, stupid, ugly trolls. Think Alexander Skarsgard.)

So, that's what I've been doing. What have you guys been up to?
ravenela: (Rosalee library)
So it was a no for all of the librarian positions I applied for. I suppose I'm not meant to be a librarian at this time.

What am I going to do now? I guess I could curl up on the couch and wallow in my misery, but that's not who I am. I'm going to pick myself up by my bootstraps and carry on. My system has openings for permanent part-time library assistants with benefits and more money. So I'm going for one of those positions. In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes open for more librarian positions.

I have also printed out the second draft of White Spirit and will be making a third revision to it. And then it's on to querying.

If I can't make one dream happen right now, I'm certainly going to work on the other.

How do you pick yourself up after disappointment?

Questions

ravenela: (Redhead)
I always like these kinds of memes.

-Comment with "Winter is Coming"
-I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
-Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
-Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

[personal profile] ignipes asked me:

1. Do you like to cook?

No. In fact, all I know how to make is spaghetti and Hamburger Helper. And those Velveeta meals. The Bearded One takes care of most of the cooking duties.

2. How did you get into writing and when did you decide to become serious about it? (Two questions! I know! I'm cheating!)

I started writing when I was a little girl. I had notebooks filled with short little stories, and then I moved up to chapter stories when I was about nine. I decided to become serious about it a few years ago after my cancer scare. I turned thirty and realized I hadn't even tried to get published.

3. What do you love about being a librarian?

Matching a person with a book they love. I haven't become an expert at it yet, but I'm working on it.

4. What's your favorite kind of vacation reading?

The kind of books I always read - sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and YA.

5. If you were a crew member on a spaceship (Star Trek canon or whatever, anything), what position would you have?

I'd probably be an archivist or manning the ship's library. Surely they have one, right? I'd be the one they'd go to for sensitive computer documents. :)

Writing this draft is like pulling teeth. I like the story, and when I'm not writing it, I have ideas and I'm excited. But the minute I sit down to work on it, I want to be anywhere else. I think I even changed cat litter to distract myself.

Okay, I'm going to be better next week. I have a three-day weekend coming up. Time to give myself a push.

At this rate, I'm not going to finish on January 30. So, new goal! In February, I'm going to take a break to make the third pass on White Spirit, and then I'm going to start querying that book. In March, I'll return to this one. My projected goal, then, will be April 30. I want this done before summer so I can work on Mayberry with Monsters.

I hang my head in shame. This was not a productive week for me or the story. I did, however, sit down and figure out where the story is heading next. So, go me!

My confidence took a beating when I read a blog post about writing that basically said your crappy first draft shouldn't be all that crappy. You have to outline and know every detail before you put word to page.

For a brief moment, I felt like I was doing everything all wrong. And then several of my friends reminded me that there is no right or wrong way to write. I've completed one draft before; I can complete this one.

That chick can keep her outlines; I'll continue to discover my story through writing it out.

Next week will be more productive.

Status: I slacked off badly the last two months, especially last month. I didn't write at all during Christmas and New Year. But now I'm back on the horse. I'd still like to finish this draft by the end of the month, but I don't know if that's possible.

I'm still very much in the beginning stages, and it still feels like I'm rambling. But a few ideas have popped up that might help this story develop a solid plot. Now if I could get my two main characters to stop dancing around each other.

I'll be honest. A little cheerleading would go along way.
ravenela: (Rosalee library)
Welcome to 2013, everyone! Let's make this a good one!

I'm a little sad now that the holidays are over, but I always am. I really get into the whole gift-giving of it all. At least [community profile] fandom_stocking is still going. I have a few gifts to drop off there.

Speaking of, they're looking for volunteers to help stuff stockings. Go here to find out if there are fandoms you can write or create art for. No one goes away empty-handed.

With it being a new year and all, it's time to set up new goals.

WRITING

1) Finish the rough draft of OF THE SEA, my mermaids in Charleston story.
2) Work on third draft of WHITE SPIRIT and start querying it.
3) Retool MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS, my YA.
4) Write something completely new.

READING

Start at the beginning of my Goodreads To Read List and start reading all the books you've had on there for a long time. My goal is fifty books this year so let's see how we do.

And now, I think it's time for some breakfast, don't you?
ravenela: (Arrow)
I'm feeling very accomplished today. I've started my Christmas shopping, and I have an idea of how to write my way out of a hole in my WIP. *Beams*

My WIP has been giving me fits for the past few days. My FMC hasn't discovered my MMC's secret yet so this makes for an awkward first date. She suspects, but thinks she's nuts. Who would really believe this guy is a merman, am I right? ;) But I think I know where to go with this.

In the meantime, let's talk Arrow: )

So, yes, I love this show and am sad tonight is the midseason finale. Argh!

What do you think?
ravenela: (Brian - original story)
Current Word Count on OF THE SEA: 9,102

As you can see, I will not be winning NaNo this year. This is not a new trend for me. However, I'm not going to stop writing when December 1 rolls up on the calendar.

This story is just starting to get good. Yeah, it's been slow going, and I probably should kick up the pace, but new ideas are occurring to me. I think I know where I'm going to take this story next. I also won't be afraid to throw a wrench or two into it because that might help me figure out the plot.

So, I carry on. After all, Brian didn't have a sister before, and now he does. Addison has a mysterious past; I only need to figure it out. It'll all come together. I know it will.

I hope you had better success with NaNo than I did. If you're not finished, though, keep going. Finish that rough draft. There's no telling where the story may lead.
ravenela: (Nick reading - BM_Shipper)
After spending my weekend recovering from a cold, I'm back to my normal self. I still have a lingering cough, but I'm doing good.

I'm also getting back into the writing routine. I haven't touched OF THE SEA for a week so I have to remember where I left off. I think one character sliced another's throat.

I also dipped my toes back into fanfic. I signed up for the OUAT Exchange and am writing a fic for it. It's a rough draft right now and needs some more work, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a beta look over it. I can't tell you what characters its about since the fics will be anonymous until January 7, but I'd welcome the help. Any takers?

Speaking of OUAT, It's owning my soul )

And now for a writing meme I stole from [personal profile] medie: You take your latest WIP and find an instance of the word look and share it with everyone.

Your first glimpse at OF THE SEA - unedited )
ravenela: (Brian - original story)

Good afternoon, everyone! Last week, I started writing the first draft of my new story, OF THE SEA. It's got murderous merpeople, water magic, Charleston, and lots of fun. As you can see from the progress bar, I'm not too far into it yet, but I have started.

Already, I've written a big merman fight, and my main male character has saved the life of my main female character. Let's see where I can take them from there.
