Well, it's been a minute. A mixture of snow, a bout of strep throat, and some pure laziness have kept me away. Yes, I'm still rewatching Highlander, but it might be next week before we can continue with the journey.

Okay...things that are happening:

*I'm thinking about sending WHITE SPIRIT out to small publishers to see what happens. Any suggestions of good ones? Or ones to avoid?

*In the meantime, I'm working on the second draft of DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. This version feels a lot better.

*Things are still rolling along around here. I've cleaned out the bedroom and am planning to clean out the office at the end of this month. Let the spring cleaning frenzy continue!

So, how are things with you?
ravenela: (Jennifer/Duke - iloveimpala67)
Good morning! How are you?

A quick update on the state of me...

*Still querying WHITE SPIRIT and learning with each new letter. I've also pulled out DON'T FEED THE TROLLS (formerly MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS) and am preparing to start draft two. So many plot holes, but I think I have some ideas to fill them.

*Having a lot of fun rewatching Highlander. A new post will be along as soon as I have some free time.

*Found a new laptop I like. It's an ASUS and it's affordable. My poor desktop is getting older so it is time for something new.

What have y'all been up to?

I'm currently in the throes of procrastination right now so I give you a blog post!

My TARDIS cardigan, or TARDIgan if you will, came in from Her Universe yesterday. It is absolutely adorable! They also now have their Captain America cardigan available in my size again. So that's for the next paycheck. I'm going to be a stylin' librarian, peeps.

Hubby and I celebrated our eight wedding anniversary with a pizza, cupcakes, and The Lego Movie. When we do romance, we do romance.

Right now, I'm contemplating tossing my cat Sam out the window because he is getting into everything. Argh! To be fair, he hates the sound of the dishwasher. He won't calm down until it's finished.

In fandom news, I'm contemplating another round of The Original Character Big Bang over on LJ. A couple of people have sent me messages asking if I'll do it again so I'm trying to gauge the interest. I've been out of touch with fandom for so long. Are big bangs still a thing? So, if you're initerested, drop me a comment.

Okay, enough procrastination. Back to the story. Ghost hunters and sexy psychics aren't going to fix themselves.
ravenela: (Belle/Rumple - Chloris)
Seven years ago today, I married my best friend. It was a small and pretty wedding full of family and a few close friends. I wore a simple wedding gown, and Hubby wore a tux with a long jacket. He even pulled his long hair back for the occasion. However, the beard was in attendance.

I have to say, I was surprised I was getting married. At the beginning of the 2000s, I never thought I'd find Mr. Right. I had dated a few clunkers, and I was discouraged.

Then in 2001, a few college friends and I saw Moulin Rouge ... )

And now, on with the 31 Day Meme.

5. 10 songs you love right now

Happy Monday! Hope yours was filled with rainbows and puppies. Mine was filled with writing and library patrons and Henry Cavill. Yay!

I have a Squeeworthy Books post, a Summer Fling post, and a Write Motivation post to put up. But this is not those posts. (The Summer Fling one is going to be fun. I found Red Riding Hood - a kids movie, not the teen one. Oh, Henry, what were you thinking?)

No, this one is a regular ole update post.

*I have the urge to write fic for Man of Steel. I'm probably going to break down and do it just because I can't resist. (Plus, I need to do something with my time while I wait for it to come out on DVD. Seriously, why is it not in my hot little hands yet?)

*After I finish Among Others by Jo Walton, I'm taking a mini-break from sci-fi/fantasy. I have some romance by Jayne Ann Krentz and Karen White and some historical fiction by Lauren Willig and Philippa Gregory lined up. I need a change of reading pace for a while. If you have a historical fiction or romance (contemporary or suspense, but not erotica - it makes me blush) suggestion, please give it to me.

*I will finish WHITE SPIRIT by August 17. Mark my words! Tristan and McKenna are behaving, and I'm pleased. Sexy psychics, for the win!

*The Bearded One is planning to take me to the beach for my birthday at the end of this month. So looking forward to it. It'll us, the waves, and a book. Perfect!

So, what's new with you? :)
ravenela: (Henry)
Happy afternoon! It's another Monday, and another month. If you live in the US, what are your plans for the fourth?

* After totaling our car two weekends ago (don't worry, everyone is fine), we bought a new car yesterday. It's a blue Honda Civic Coupe, and I adore it. Absolutely adore it.

You see, the weekend before last, Hubby and I visited his mother in SC. While driving to dinner, a driver hit our car and ripped off the back end. Everyone was fine, but the other driver kept on going. Needless to say, we were able to get a new car.

* Writing is going well. We've started a new month of Write Motivation, and here are my goals:

1) Get halfway through the edits on WHITE SPIRIT.

I've put chapters one and two to bed and have moved on to chapter three. So far, I'm very pleased. Let's hope this trend will continue.

2) Work on it every day.

Last week was hit or miss, but I had more hits than misses. This week hasn't started off very well (I have to be at work in a little while), but I'll pick up the slack tomorrow.

* Yeah, Henry Cavill is still hot. I have a few upcoming posts about that.

So, what's new with you?
ravenela: (Redhead)
While cleaning the apartment the other day, I came across my old eighth grade newsletter. Inside it were predictions of where all of us would be when we were adults. Mine read, "Editor of a teen magazine." Yeah, I guess we can say I was a little off base.

Anyway, I got to thinking. If I could write a letter to my thirteen-year-old self, what would I say to her? It'd probably go something like this:

Dear Teen Self,

Hello! How are you? Not crying in the corner of your bedroom today, I hope.

First of all, I am so sorry about our hair. It's always going to be frizzy. It's best if we accept that now. But if you choose to cut it short, do not let Mom style it. Mom is awesome, but she still has a bit of the beehive going on.

Second, let's talk about the upcoming visit from the high school guidance counselor. You're going to get to choose your freshmen classes then, and it's a pretty overwhelming choice. Here's a tip. Do not choose Teen Living. We are not a domestic person, and it's going to make you miserable.

Instead, face your fears and audition for chorus. I know the fourth grade talent show freaked you out. Kids made fun of your song choice, and you accidentally turned off the mic before you started singing. Forget all that. There's no sense in being afraid of that. I promise...once you go to Appalachian State, you'll never see these people again.

Now, down the road, you're going to want to be editor of the yearbook. Make this clear to the teacher who runs it. Work hard, sit down with her and tell how much you want it. Trust me, the girl who gets it our senior year does not appreciate it as much as you would. You'll wind up doing most of her section anyway.

I know things look dire now. No boyfriend, no real best friend (last year was rough, I know), but I promise, it's going to get better. I'm not going to tell you everything, but let's just say he has Joe McIntyre's eyes.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to be yourself. It doesn't matter what anyone else says or does. You're a pretty awesome person. You're going to go places and do things and meet awesome people. Just go have fun and fly your freak flag high.

Yours Truly,
Your 35-year-old Self

What would you say to your teen self if you could?
ravenela: (Troi/Riker)
Good morning, everyone! After yesterday's sad post, let's have a happy one. After all, it is Friday so it's time to think of the good things in life.

Star Trek ramblings...featuring DS9 and Voyager...you can skip if you're not interested... )

I also caught up on Arrow this week. So, so good. And Smash is back on my TV. A show about Broadway and the theater? Yes, please. Who else watches it?

Meanwhile, in real life news, my library manager said he was happy to keep me around. Made me feel good.

Also, I'm giving Twitter another try. I'm AmyRav if you want to look for me. What's your Twitter name so I can find you?

All right, what's making you happy this week?
ravenela: (Rosalee library)
So it was a no for all of the librarian positions I applied for. I suppose I'm not meant to be a librarian at this time.

What am I going to do now? I guess I could curl up on the couch and wallow in my misery, but that's not who I am. I'm going to pick myself up by my bootstraps and carry on. My system has openings for permanent part-time library assistants with benefits and more money. So I'm going for one of those positions. In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes open for more librarian positions.

I have also printed out the second draft of White Spirit and will be making a third revision to it. And then it's on to querying.

If I can't make one dream happen right now, I'm certainly going to work on the other.

How do you pick yourself up after disappointment?

I always like these kinds of memes.

-Comment with "Winter is Coming"
-I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
-Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
-Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

[personal profile] ignipes asked me:

1. Do you like to cook?

No. In fact, all I know how to make is spaghetti and Hamburger Helper. And those Velveeta meals. The Bearded One takes care of most of the cooking duties.

2. How did you get into writing and when did you decide to become serious about it? (Two questions! I know! I'm cheating!)

I started writing when I was a little girl. I had notebooks filled with short little stories, and then I moved up to chapter stories when I was about nine. I decided to become serious about it a few years ago after my cancer scare. I turned thirty and realized I hadn't even tried to get published.

3. What do you love about being a librarian?

Matching a person with a book they love. I haven't become an expert at it yet, but I'm working on it.

4. What's your favorite kind of vacation reading?

The kind of books I always read - sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and YA.

5. If you were a crew member on a spaceship (Star Trek canon or whatever, anything), what position would you have?

I'd probably be an archivist or manning the ship's library. Surely they have one, right? I'd be the one they'd go to for sensitive computer documents. :)
ravenela: (Tardis)
The library system I work for posted new full-time librarian positions today, and I applied for one of them. I hope I get one.

I also got in touch with a long time friend. We were pen pals back in high school and college, but we lost touch in our adult years. I decided to see if her e-mail still worked, and yay! It did. :)

Brief Thinky Thoughts About Doctor Who )
ravenela: (Redhead)
Hi, everyone! I've made some new friends thanks to [personal profile] kouredios's awesome friending meme.

Welcome, welcome! I'm ravenela, also known as Amy, and I'm dragonsinger on LJ as well (but I haven't been using my LJ lately...I seem to have migrated).

I'm a redheaded librarian who happens to be a huge booknerd and has an unhealthy TV addiction. Favorite writers are Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Nora Roberts, and Kelley Armstrong. Favorite TV shows are Highlander, Charmed, OUAT, Castle, Criminal Minds, Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, Beauty and the Beast (2012), Grimm, and the Mentalist. Thanks to the reboot, my hubby and I have been streamlining all the Star Trek canon. We're up to DS9 right now.

I'm also a writer who is trying to get published. I prattle on about my original stuff as well as my fannish stuff. All my fanfic can be found here. It hasn't been updated in a few years, but now that I've earned my master's, I might have time for both fanfic and original fic.:)

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell. It's nice to meet everyone, and I'm so happy fandom hasn't completely abandoned the journal format.:)
ravenela: (Redhead)
Ah, a lazy Sunday afternoon. Those are my favorites. The most I'm accomplishing today is laundry. How about you?

Florence and the Machine was awesome on Friday. They performed at a venue in downtown Raleigh under a very nice night. No rain for once. I was impressed.

Florence does an awful lot of skipping back and forth while she sings, and I loved it. It made you feel like she was really happy you were there. Trust me, I was really happy I was there. She sang all my favorites - "No Light, No Light," "Breath of Life," and "Cosmic Love." It was absolutely fantastic. I'd definitely go see her in concert again.

I also took myself out to the coffee shop to work on WS yesterday. It felt good to get out of the house, and I was more productive in a new environment. Must do that more often.

Finally, Hubby and I are plowing through Star Trek:TNG. We're up to season six now. I'm telling you, the show keeps getting better and better.

Okay, time to settle in for some reading. I'm in the middle of Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake. It's the sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood (and if you haven't read that book yet, you really need to).
