Well, it's been a minute. A mixture of snow, a bout of strep throat, and some pure laziness have kept me away. Yes, I'm still rewatching Highlander, but it might be next week before we can continue with the journey.

Okay...things that are happening:

*I'm thinking about sending WHITE SPIRIT out to small publishers to see what happens. Any suggestions of good ones? Or ones to avoid?

*In the meantime, I'm working on the second draft of DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. This version feels a lot better.

*Things are still rolling along around here. I've cleaned out the bedroom and am planning to clean out the office at the end of this month. Let the spring cleaning frenzy continue!

So, how are things with you?
ravenela: (Jennifer/Duke - iloveimpala67)
Good morning! How are you?

A quick update on the state of me...

*Still querying WHITE SPIRIT and learning with each new letter. I've also pulled out DON'T FEED THE TROLLS (formerly MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS) and am preparing to start draft two. So many plot holes, but I think I have some ideas to fill them.

*Having a lot of fun rewatching Highlander. A new post will be along as soon as I have some free time.

*Found a new laptop I like. It's an ASUS and it's affordable. My poor desktop is getting older so it is time for something new.

What have y'all been up to?
ravenela: (Winter Soldier)
I'm currently in the throes of procrastination right now so I give you a blog post!

My TARDIS cardigan, or TARDIgan if you will, came in from Her Universe yesterday. It is absolutely adorable! They also now have their Captain America cardigan available in my size again. So that's for the next paycheck. I'm going to be a stylin' librarian, peeps.

Hubby and I celebrated our eight wedding anniversary with a pizza, cupcakes, and The Lego Movie. When we do romance, we do romance.

Right now, I'm contemplating tossing my cat Sam out the window because he is getting into everything. Argh! To be fair, he hates the sound of the dishwasher. He won't calm down until it's finished.

In fandom news, I'm contemplating another round of The Original Character Big Bang over on LJ. A couple of people have sent me messages asking if I'll do it again so I'm trying to gauge the interest. I've been out of touch with fandom for so long. Are big bangs still a thing? So, if you're initerested, drop me a comment.

Okay, enough procrastination. Back to the story. Ghost hunters and sexy psychics aren't going to fix themselves.
ravenela: (Ichabod - Naushika)
Good morning!

This blog has been quiet for a little while, but I have a good reason for that. And that reason is my manuscript, White Spirit.

If you've been following me for a while, you know I've been working on this story off and on for six years now (nine if you count the planning and false starts). Well, I'm nearing the end of this draft, and I think it's ready to be sent out into the world. I've got a list of agents, and we're going to see what happens. Wish me luck!

In other book news, my friend Alexandra Christian has a new short erotic horror piece called Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. It's about the dangers of being a fangirl. It's only $1.99. Give it a read!

I've also spent this summer hanging out on Tumblr and swooning over Sebastian Stan. It started with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it got worse from there. I'd include pictures, but I'm at work right now.

So that's where I've been. What have you been up to this summer?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
Happy spring, everybody! It's been a while since the last update so I thought I'd let you know I'm alive.

-The first draft of Mayberry with Monsters (no titled Don't Feed the Trolls) is finished. I'm letting it chill for a while before I revise it.

-I'm starting in on the next draft of White Spirit. This one is going a lot better. At this point, I don't feel frustrated. Always a good sign.

-Query letters will go out this summer. All they can do is tell me no. I'm hoping they want to tell me yes.

-In non-writing news, I saw the newest Captain America. No spoilers: The Winter Soldier needs the love of a good woman. And I volunteer for that position. Also, Black Widow was awesome.

So, what's new with you?
ravenela: (Abbie and Ichabod - Naushika)
Happy December! And we're back to our regular schedule. But it is the month of Christmas so that makes me happy.

How about another Blog Posting Day!

8 Post a song that makes you want to write. (Or gets you in the mood to read All Of The Fanfic.)

I'll post links to youtube videos when I get home, probably tomorrow. Until then, I'll just list.

For my current original story, MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS:

No Light, No Light - Florence + the Machine
Sinister Kid - Black Keys
Barton Hollow - The Civil Wars
Again - Flyleaf
Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos

For my previous story, WHITE SPIRIT:

Haunted - Poe
Amazed - Poe
Questions - System of a Down
Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails
Living Dead Girl - Rob Zombie

I haven't written fic in a while, but I have a couple of songs that remind me of current fandoms:

ET - Katy Perry (Thor)
Devil's Backbone - The Civil Wars (Haven)
The Last Dance - Within Temptation (Sleepy Hollow)

Yay, music!

The Questions )
ravenela: (Duke bw - iloveimpala67)
How about I post something that's not meme or TV-related? Although, Duke and Ichabod will sneak in there somehow, and wouldn't that be a weird crossover? Anyway...

Still writing, but I haven't made any strides to query anything yet. *Makes a face* I'm disappointed in myself.

I set aside WHITE SPIRIT to work on MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS. Maybe this'll refresh me, and I can finish that edit.

I'm also really behind on all of my shows, except for Sleepy Hollow and Agents of SHIELD. There will be catching up this December. Lots of catching up.

All right, back to the writing drawing board.
ravenela: (Redhead)
* I'm never going to finish WHITE SPIRIT. It's going to keep going and going and going...

* Sometimes I look at people and think, "It must be exhausting trying to be cynical and cool all the time."

* Jotted ideas down for the merman book the other day. I'm pleased with many of them.

* I have no idea why the library is full of people today. We don't have any programs going on. It's a beautiful day outside; why are you all here?

* Almost finished with Sweet Legacy by Tera Lynn Childs, and then I can start Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I've heard good things.

* One kid is watching Zack and Cody on one of the computers. I find myself watching with him from my seat on the desk, even though I can't hear it.

* I wish this child behind me would stop screaming.

* Ooh, the Emmys come on tonight. I'll be in my pajamas, stuffing my face with potato chips while I watch. I'm a sucker for awards shows.

How is your Sunday going?
ravenela: (McKenna/Tristan - original story)
Good morning! I'm wearing both my librarian and writer hats today. I have another book to squee about, and some writing updates to impart.

Let's start with the Squeeworthy Book. I've been thinking of ways to change up the format of this feature to make it more interesting so I'm going to try some new things in the coming weeks. Something's bound to stick, right?

Anyway, this week's Squeeworthy Book is another series, Medusa Girls by Tera Lynn Childs.

Plot: Grace, Gretchen, and Greer each grew up in different households. When the three come together, they learn they are identical triplets and have the power to send mythological monsters back to their own realm. They are also the Key Generation, three young women prophesied to open the door between our world and the world of the monsters. It's Charmed meets Greek mythology.

Favorite Character: Grace, definitely. She is the sister who grows the most throughout the trilogy. She's smart and she learns to kick butt.

Why is it squeeworthy? This whole series is so much fun. You have three sisters learning who they are and about their magical powers. And they're fighting monsters along the way. Did I mention that it reminds me of Charmed? Each girl has an individual power in addition to the powers all three share. It's magic, it's mayhem, and it's wonderful.

Okay, and now for my #writemotivation update.

I haven't accomplished anything this past week, but to be fair, I had a houseguest.

1) Plot out MWM

I wrote down some more notes about my witches and my trolls, but a coherent plot still eludes me. I'll continue to dig.

2) Write query for WS

I have less than 100 pages to go on this draft, and I'm worried it won't reach 80,000 words. If I can get it as close as possible, I can write the query.

3) Send out first round of queries

See above.

4) Write first chapter of MWM

Still need to plot and outline before I begin.

How are your writing projects coming? Got any squeeworthy books to recommend?
ravenela: (Felicity - tea otter)
Tuesday is upon us, and September is halfway over. How did that happen? Wait...next week is the premiere of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., isn't it? Excellent!

All right, my current status with WHITE SPIRIT is I'm almost done. One hundred pages are left. If I make a hard push, I can finish this draft and start to query it. Lots of work ahead!

Fall TV shows have started! Did anyone else watch Sleepy Hollow last night? I loved it. I loved every single minute of it. I've found a new show. Come, discuss with me in the comments!

In the meantime, back to the editing!
ravenela: (Rosalee/Monroe)
September is here! And it's time to freshen up my writing.

I'm almost done with this draft of WHITE SPIRIT. The end is so close. While I finish it up, I want to devote some time to my new story.

Well, it's not completely new. It's more like a revamp.

In spring 2012, I wrote a very rough draft of a YA story about witches and trolls in my hometown. The working title is MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS (I grew up in the same area Andy Griffith did so that's where the title came from). Sadly, there were a lot of things happening but no plotline could be found. It was all over the place.

So, this fall, I'm revamping the idea. I'm changing up my troll and witch mythology. I've cut several characters. And I'm going to give it a real plot.

And that's where this month's #Writemotivation goals come in.

1) Plot out MWM

At this point, I'm trying to find all the troll mythology I can get my hands on. I found a book of Swedish folktales and legends, and I've scoured the internet. Do you know of any other books or websites where I can find information?

2) Write query for WS

Will do, as soon as I finish this draft.

3) Send out first round of queries

Will do as soon as I finish this draft.

4) Write first chapter of MWM

Will do as soon as I get my plot and outline in order.

For WS, I wrote by the seat of my pants. That meant a lot of revising. I hope with MWM, I can do a lot of the work up front, and maybe revision hell won't be so hellish.

How are your writing projects coming?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
The rumors of my death have been exaggerated. I'm still around, just nose deep in edits on WHITE SPIRIT. *Sings: "This is the book that never ends...never ends...never ends." Of course, I'm probably the only one who reads my blog, but I felt I should pop up anyway.

WS is moving very slowly. The edits are making it a better book, but I wonder if I'll ever be satisfied. I probably worry too much about this book, you know? But Tristan, McKenna, and the gang have been in my head for a good while now; I want to make them shine.

But this is the last edit for this round. After this, I'm going to start querying for an agent and see what happens.

In the meantime, my YA idea, MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS, is kicking around in my head. Dani, Jared, and their group really want their time in the spotlight. I actually wrote a rough draft for this idea once, but it had no plot. So, I'm ripping apart the original idea and starting from scratch. So far, I love my version of witches and trolls. (No, these are not your typical lumbering, giant, stupid, ugly trolls. Think Alexander Skarsgard.)

So, that's what I've been doing. What have you guys been up to?
ravenela: (McKenna/Tristan - original story)
Happy Monday, everyone! We're fresh off the weekend and all the SDCC excitement. So much picture and video pretty that I can't even process. The Man of Steel and Henry Cavill fangirl in me is flailing.

But now, it's time to put my author hat back on. See the icon there? That's my two MCs from WHITE SPIRIT - McKenna and Tristan. The manip isn't great, but the icon doesn't look too bad.

Anyway, time to check in with my #writemotivation goals. If you're playing along, and I haven't commented on your blog yet, please let me know.

1) Get halfway through the edits on WHITE SPIRIT.

Still moving along. I'm stuck at chapter five because it's a very emotional chapter. I want to make sure I'm showing the emotion and that Tristan isn't wimping out on me. I'm having trouble striking that balance. Anybody got any tips?

2) Work on it every day.

Not a good week for it. I missed three days. It was entirely my fault for being lazy. Argh!

So, how is your writing/editing/creative project coming?
ravenela: (Write - created by mercurybard)
It's another week; let's see how those goals are going.

1) Get halfway through the edits on WHITE SPIRIT.

Since adding those two scenes in, my plot moved a bit smoother. I don't know whether they gave my characters more of an emotional foundation or what. But chapter five is chugging right along. This is the chapter where I've killed off one of my MC's best friends. Now I need to pour the emotion into it. In the previous drafts, it was sparse and I can see why my betas told me to punch it up.

Also, I've set a deadline for these edits - August 17. Writing it down made it seem more real so I think I need to do more of that.

2) Work on it every day.

I missed last Wednesday and Friday, but I've worked on it all the other days. Gotta keep this up.

Now, if only they would fix the air conditioner here at work.
ravenela: (Rosalee library)
Happy Monday! Hope yours was filled with rainbows and puppies. Mine was filled with writing and library patrons and Henry Cavill. Yay!

I have a Squeeworthy Books post, a Summer Fling post, and a Write Motivation post to put up. But this is not those posts. (The Summer Fling one is going to be fun. I found Red Riding Hood - a kids movie, not the teen one. Oh, Henry, what were you thinking?)

No, this one is a regular ole update post.

*I have the urge to write fic for Man of Steel. I'm probably going to break down and do it just because I can't resist. (Plus, I need to do something with my time while I wait for it to come out on DVD. Seriously, why is it not in my hot little hands yet?)

*After I finish Among Others by Jo Walton, I'm taking a mini-break from sci-fi/fantasy. I have some romance by Jayne Ann Krentz and Karen White and some historical fiction by Lauren Willig and Philippa Gregory lined up. I need a change of reading pace for a while. If you have a historical fiction or romance (contemporary or suspense, but not erotica - it makes me blush) suggestion, please give it to me.

*I will finish WHITE SPIRIT by August 17. Mark my words! Tristan and McKenna are behaving, and I'm pleased. Sexy psychics, for the win!

*The Bearded One is planning to take me to the beach for my birthday at the end of this month. So looking forward to it. It'll us, the waves, and a book. Perfect!

So, what's new with you? :)
ravenela: (Felicity - tea otter)
Pictures! I need pictures. I can't write without pictures, and sadly, I can't draw. So Pinterest is the next best thing.

White Spirit has a board as does Mayberry with Monsters. It's kind of nice to have all my visuals in one place.

Description is my weak point, especially if the place or person exists only in my head. So having a visual helps with that. And plus it's fun to look at pretty, pretty pictures.

Who has a Pinterest besides me? Because I need more boards to follow.
ravenela: (McKenna/Tristan - original story)
Okay, so, to get myself writing today, I may have committed an act of fanfiction. It wasn't big. A simple Man of Steel drabble. But it did get me into work mode, and sometimes you need that, right?

What gets you into work mode?

Anyway, let's look at our July Write Motivation goals, shall we?

1) Get halfway through the edits on WHITE SPIRIT.

I don't think I'm revising right. I'm on the third draft, and I'm adding in new scenes. To be fair, I did cut a couple that were dead weight. But I've noticed I needed to fix the flow. Granted, I'm not adding as many as I did during the last draft, but I'm still adding. I like to think of it as fleshing out the characters, you know?

Meanwhile, I'm getting a better understanding of Tristan and McKenna and how their powers and relationship works. I'm very pleased.

2) Work on it every day.

In my defense, there was a holiday last week. I'm back on track as of today, though. Onward and upward.
ravenela: (Henry)
Happy afternoon! It's another Monday, and another month. If you live in the US, what are your plans for the fourth?

* After totaling our car two weekends ago (don't worry, everyone is fine), we bought a new car yesterday. It's a blue Honda Civic Coupe, and I adore it. Absolutely adore it.

You see, the weekend before last, Hubby and I visited his mother in SC. While driving to dinner, a driver hit our car and ripped off the back end. Everyone was fine, but the other driver kept on going. Needless to say, we were able to get a new car.

* Writing is going well. We've started a new month of Write Motivation, and here are my goals:

1) Get halfway through the edits on WHITE SPIRIT.

I've put chapters one and two to bed and have moved on to chapter three. So far, I'm very pleased. Let's hope this trend will continue.

2) Work on it every day.

Last week was hit or miss, but I had more hits than misses. This week hasn't started off very well (I have to be at work in a little while), but I'll pick up the slack tomorrow.

* Yeah, Henry Cavill is still hot. I have a few upcoming posts about that.

So, what's new with you?
ravenela: (Uhura klingon)
Ah, another week is here, and it's time to check on the #Writemotivation goals. I would've posted these yesterday, but I was geeking out over Man of Steel. Come geek out with me.

All right, let's see how the editing is going.

1) Complete at least four chapters of the WHITE SPIRIT revision.

I've been switching and changing scenes in both chapters two and three for the past week. I have to say, I think it has a smoother flow now. *Nods* I have two weeks left in this month, right? I can knock out two more chapters. *Puffs out chest*

2) Work on it every day.

I can actually say I've worked on this story every week day. I keep missing weekends, though. It's tough when you share an office with your husband, and he likes to watch Youtube videos during the weekend.

3) Start researching trolls for my YA, MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS (working title).

Haven't even begun yet. I really need to see if the library has any books I can put on hold.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this month. I still want to finish WHITE SPIRIT by the end of July. It'll take some pushing, but I think I'm up to the task.
ravenela: (Uhura klingon)
It's another one of those days where I don't have a whole epic blog for you. And that's okay. I do have cats, though. I'll introduce you at the end of this post.

#WriteMotivation is going very slowly. Last week was a horrible wash.

1) Complete at least four chapters of the WHITE SPIRIT revision.

I've stalled out on chapter three. I'm second guessing everything I wrote before, wondering if I need to open it differently or keep it the same. Should we meet McKenna through Tommy? Should McKenna be introduced in her own chapter? Should I wait until Tristan meets McKenna to introduce her? Hmmm...

2) Work on it every day.

I started off so well. And then I had to take the car to the Honda place last Wednesday so the last part was wasted.

3) Start researching trolls for my YA, MAYBERRY WITH MONSTERS (working title).

Have not begun this yet, but I have some basic notes.

How is your summer going? I like my permanent part time job. Lots of kids and teens signing up for the summer reading program. All teens, I encourage you to sign up for the teen summer reading program at your branch. And if you're an adult, find out if your library has an adult reading program. We have one, and one of the prizes is a Kindle Fire.

And now for the promised kitties. What? Other people share pictures of their children. )
